Our values

What guides our practice

Behaviour is communication

We start by asking what a person may be telling us, and what they need, before deciding what to do.

Neuroaffirming and trauma-informed

We respect autistic and neurodivergent ways of being, and we recognise how past experiences shape what feels safe.

Rights-based and least restrictive

We work to identify, reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate restrictive practices.

Relationships first

Lasting change comes from the people around someone understanding them better. We work with the whole support network.

Practical and local

Strategies have to work in real homes, schools and workplaces in the North West, with the resources people actually have.

Wellbeing and belonging

Supporting wellbeing, belonging and a good life, connected to family, community, culture and Country.

Practitioners

Our team

Meg Hughes

Meg Hughes

Director and Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner

Meg specialises in supporting children, young people and families through a compassionate, relationship-based and practical Positive Behaviour Support approach. Her work is grounded in the belief that behaviour is communication, and that lasting change happens when the people around a child understand their needs, strengths, communication, sensory profile, relationships and environment.

Meg works alongside families, schools, support teams and services to move beyond managing behaviour and towards wellbeing, safety, connection and quality of life.

Meg is also the founder of ConnectFirst™, which provides online training and supervision for Behaviour Support Practitioners across Australia.

Jo Butler

Proficient Behaviour Support Practitioner

Jo supports both children and adults. She works with participants, families, support workers, schools and disability providers to understand behaviours of concern, identify unmet needs and develop practical, individualised Behaviour Support Plans.

Her work builds consistency, skills and confidence across the participant’s whole support network.

Governance

Clinical leadership and governance

Clinical practice is led by our Director, Meg Hughes, a Specialist Behaviour Support Practitioner. Practitioners take part in regular clinical supervision and peer review, and plans are reviewed for quality before they are finalised.

Services operate within Assist Disability Services Pty Ltd’s registered provider structure, including its policies for incident management, complaints, privacy and restrictive practice reporting.

Ethics

Ethical, rights-based practice

  • Informed consent from participants, nominees or guardians
  • Plans written in plain language that the person and their supporters can use
  • Participant voice and choice at the centre of every plan
  • Clear processes when restrictive practices are identified
  • Respect for culture, family and community
